Consider a way to call for help if your house collapses on top of you or some nut is trying to get in. Build it so the door can stand open in normal use or with power ventilation or dehumidification. In the basement, you want a room that stays ventilated well when not in use. Blocks are actually fairly fragile, and alone they wouldn't hold up long to a man with a sledgehammer. You are part of the way there being in a basement, but keep in mind that a tornado can blow a 2X4 through a block wall. Your concern for a storm shelter is to keep it from being pierced by flying debris. Just a thumbnail sketch of one way to build one. In your existing structure you could fab the ceiling out of steel or maybe narrow pre-stressed concrete panels placed side by side. I didn't vent mine to fresh air which if I had to build another one, I would run pvc about 50' out into the yard for a fresh air vent just in case. I haven't had to use it for a storm or panic room yet but it does give you peace of mind. So a total of 15" between the two placements, double reinforced with a thermal break so the ceiling doesn't sweat.ĭoor: I bought a commercially built vault door with an internal release so you can lock yourself in and let yourself out. Next was 4" of rigid insulation and a second 7" thick placement with a similar grid structure. The first concrete placement was 8" thick with fiber, IIRC it was a special 7,000 psi mix. The rebar was pinned to the concrete floor and continued the entire height of the wall where it was bent at 90 degrees and tied into the ceiling rebar.Ĭeiling: I poured the ceiling with #6 rebar in a 6" x 6" grid all tied into rebar from the walls. Walls: I used 12" cinder blocks for the walls that were completely core filled with #5 rebar in every cell. It's been a while, but here is how I basically made it: I made one that is roughly 8' x 14' that meets my needs. So in case something does happen and where stuck in this room we can atleast get some air flowing. Cut a hole in the block and bolt in some steel plates. I would probably make some un bolting windows. I would also want to make this into my gun room. What would I make the roof of this room out of?

I would like to make this room big enough to store food and sleep in if I need too.

However I would like to keep the room solid with no openings.

The one corner has a window that I could break to open if I needed too. Should I make or buy a big thick steel door? It would need to open in in case the house falls on top of it. if I put it in a corner then 2 walls will already be solid concrete. I was thinking block would be fine even without concrete. Im debating on making the room out of block (cinder blocks). The side with the walk out door is open to the elements but its fairly protected due to a woods unless the wind is coming out of the NE.
